“For years I have been a fan of the glitch aesthetic. I have a college friend who is a great bender of circuits himself. I personally have assembled a fair amount of glitch samples, and many are quite interesting. To think that a system seems more complelling when it does not act as it should has many ramifications– I will let you list and ponder them. In this case, I have taken the trouble to acquire an SA-1 ‘Aleatron’ device from the well-regarded Reed Ghazala, and this is the first release in which I have attempted to integrate circuit-bent sounds recorded from this device. Special thanks go out to Mr. Ghazala for his excellent craftsmanship– those interested in great bent instruments might consider looking him up.”

Thomas Park- Riviera Sugar Fruit [treetrunk 731]

In search of great recipes for Generative output, using my Python environments, I had 2 threads running in my mind. On the one hand, the basslines from reggae and reggae-related genres were inspiring me, and I was noticing the way especially Caribbean artists were able to use them to bring organic and soulful vibes to songs. The second thread had to do with layered and/or interlocking ambient and chillout sounds, to create lush, soothing loop-based phrases. I wanted to combine elements of soul, rhythm, and ambient/electronic– music for the mind, heart, and body. “Riviera Sugar Fruit” is the result from my first take at this combination.

DJ Frankenstone- The Caliphate And The World’s Seductive Spell [treetrunk 730]

“What comes to mind when one thinks of the Mid-East? Sadly, political thoughts immediately occur to me, and I wonder about faith, religion, roots, similarities, and differences. Shepherds and farmers, sheiks and nomads. When I think of the region aesthetically, I am inclined to consider some of the most seductive cultural trends in history– the most powerful drugs, spices and teas, the most vivid rugs and tapestries. The very scripts of this area dance before my eyes– the whole speaks of a culture that combats pain with potent and possibly addictive remedies, themselves highly intoxicating. Arid, uncomfotable, yes, but at the same time very poetically representing the danger of earth’s temptations– and so, with this album. I used Generative techniques, which worked well with some sounds I have collected. Working on this, listening, I had a harder and harder time not just. . . giving. . . in. . .”

Thomas Park- Bring Joy Closer [treetrunk 729]

“When I began making music over 2 decades ago, I wondered how I might write melodies, how to compose. I have tried many methods– and quite a few have involved borrowing from or even recording the world around me– mimicking its qualities, both light and dark. In early 2022, as my generative compositions have moved into an organic abstraction– I would like to think that they mysteriously synchronize with the implicit patterns of plants, animals and nature at large. Further, while listening, I find that my mind responds to these sonic patterns. As an entire ecosystem blooms when a light spring rain begins to fall, the tired, dingy loops in my mind fade away and I seem to remember, or imagine, another environment. How long can such a place exist, in my mind? For as long, I think, as I can imagine it, believe in it, and enjoy it.
